Developer Offers Cash Amid Data Center Opposition
A developer seeking approval for a massive data center complex in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, is offering $10,000 payments to eligible local households.
NorthPoint Development is proposing Project Hazelnut, a massive data center campus in Hazle Township. The project has faced significant opposition from residents concerned about its environmental and quality-of-life impacts, including noise.
One local activist characterized the cash offer as a form of bribery. NorthPoint describes the payments as direct financial support for residents.
The developer maintains that noise from the data center would be limited and says sound at the property line would be comparable to a household dishwasher in another room. However, data center equipment operates continuously, meaning nearby residents could be exposed to noise at all hours. No comprehensive environmental impact study has been made public to date.
The dispute highlights a growing question for communities facing large data center projects over whether promised financial benefits outweigh the potential long-term impacts on nearby residents.
If residents are ultimately subjected to persistent noise, increased traffic, or other quality-of-life impacts, a one-time cash payment does nothing to eliminate those problems. Future residents may also inherit the consequences of the development without receiving any financial benefit at all.
