Tiverton Wants Less Noise
In 2005, the Conservation Commission intends to fine motorists with booming stereos and loud mufflers. Riders of noisy motorcycles, incessantly barking dogs would subject their owners to fines as well.
The proposed amendments to the town's noise ordinance, penalties for noise violations would range from a warning for the first offense to a $500 fine. Fines for owners of barking dogs would range from $50 for a first offense to $100 for a third and subsequent violations.
The proposed decibel level sets limits in different zoning districts in the town. The noise level in a residential area would not exceed 60 decibels, in a highway commercial zone and on public waterways, the decibel level should not exceed 75, according to the proposal.
The proposed amendments would require all motor vehicles and motorcycles to be equipped with a muffler in good working order that is not modified.
