Noisiest Bars Blight Manhattan Neighborhoods
The "Citizens Coalition Against Noise Pollution" Applauds Moskowitz’s Report
New York, NY -- July 31, 2005 -- New York City Council Member Eva Moskowitz has released a report on Manhattan’s noisiest bars. By releasing the findings of her investigation, she and the city council are taking important steps to helping New Yorkers get a good nights sleep.
Richard Tur, founder of NoiseOFF commented, "By 'calling them out' -- the owners of these noisy saloons will hopefully get their act together and show respect for the community and the rights of residents who have been forced to endure their noise for years."
The problem of noisy bars, nightclubs and lounges are a major concern for residents in neighborhoods all over New York City. "Angry residents often get the silent treatment when they complain to the owners of these establishments or even the authorities," said Tur.
The pounding thumping bass music, rowdy and drunken patrons and excessive vehicle traffic late at night can often be heard and felt a block away. The noises from these establishments near residential neighborhoods are nerve shattering to adults and frightening to young children.
Noisy bars also bring additional crime and blight to a community, such as public vagrancy and drunkenness, DUI, drugs and prostitution. "Because these establishments create a sense of disorder in the neighborhood, it gives patrons the impression that they can get away with bad behavior and illegal activities," Tur said.
We hope that this report will encourage city agencies to investigate and come to the rescue of residents by telling these bar owners to ‘pipe it down’. Residents should not have to endure the din.
