Welcome to NoiseOFF Yahoo! Groups
NoiseOFF was founded as a working toolkit that people can use to reduce their noise problem. The message board is a place where members can connect with others. Our goal is to help empower people to reduce noise problems in their own community.
You can begin to solve your noise problem by getting informed and participating in our group discussion. We suggest that you begin by posting a message of introduction along with a description of the specific noise problem you are experiencing. You will soon receive replies from other members that address your concerns and offer strategies to help you solve the problem. You may even find members that live near your area that you can collaborate with.
The most common sources of noise pollution come from boom cars, car alarms and loud exhaust systems. But people also experience noise pollution from barking dogs, shooting ranges, military bases, commercial and industrial businesses, nightclubs, cafes, bars, airports and more.
We can show you how to organize with your neighbors, write effective letters, lobby elected representatives, communicate with the media and deal with the authorities.
As members of the coalition, we are all working together to solve our common problem. You are not alone and we can help.

Our Mission
Most of us suffer from increasing noise pollution in our lives, but we refuse to be victims. We become activists who work to reduce noise pollution in our communities. We also empower others to do the same for themselves. We become a coalition by working together.
We meet with legislators and police commanders for stronger legislation and enforcement.
We disseminate noise pollution awareness material to various publics: neighbors, educators, students, public officials, journalists and fellow activists.
We join and speak out at political clubs, civic groups, police community councils and townhall meetings. We build alliances with others in the community.
We respond to noise pollution stories in the media. We also pitch stories on noise pollution issues to the media: radio, television, online and print.
We become experts in advertising, public relations, political lobbying, public speaking, writing, negotiating and legal practices.
We practice grassroots activism in a professional way. The end result is that not only do you effectively reduce the noise problem in your life and environment, but also learn valuable skills that empower you for life.

Posting News Articles
- The source URL is required. Members need to be able to verify the news source so that it can be cited or researched.
- Yahoo! Groups will line break long URLs that makes reading news stories from the source cumbersome. You can use TinyURL.com that can make a shorthand version of the article link.
- In the message header, be sure to specify the state and city or country if outside of the US.
For example: Bristol, CA - Town Planners Pass New Noise Ordinance - Please copy and paste the article in plain text only. Yahoo! Groups will remove any HTML or RTF formatting in the message.
Bounced Messages
Messages with rich-text-formatting or attachments are automatically stripped before they go through. From time to time, you may get an automated notice that your message has not gone through. Here is how messages go through:
- You send a message to NoiseOFF Yahoo! Groups
- Your messages go into a pending list for messages to be approved by the moderator (usually processed within a few hours)
- If approved, your message goes out to the entire group; if not approved, the message is sent back to you with an explaination from the moderator.
Check first to see if your e-mail client is working. Sometimes messages are sent to the wrong e-mail address, or your internet provider or e-mail provider is experiencing service problems. Reasons why messages are not approved:
- Messages that violate the rules (see Posting Messages).
- Messages in multiples or duplicates (this happens frequently, if your message was not approved, check to see that a copy has already been posted to the group).
- Messages that are incomprehensible or unreadable (includes corrupted messages with control characters).
- Messages that include personal contact information (we will attempt to forward the message directly to the intended party and copy the sender or edit out the personal contact information sent to the group).
- Messages intended to be private or forwarded from another person intended to be private.
